Benedetti Workshop

On Wednesday 17th June, Years One and Two had a visit from some musicians from the Benedetti Foundation. We learnt about rhythm, vibrations, the tuba and the cello. We also played some great games to practise our rhythm skills.

🌟 Mereside Children Spread Smiles During Dementia Awareness Week 🌟

As part of Dementia Awareness Week, our wonderful Mereside children created beautiful drawings and colourful pictures for the residents of Lime Trees Care Home.

We were delighted to welcome Lisa from Lime Trees Care Home, who visited school to personally thank the children for their thoughtful contributions. She kindly presented us with thank you cards from the residents, which were greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

We are incredibly proud of our children for showing such kindness, creativity and community spirit. ❤️

Science: plants and trees

As part of our science lesson, we spent some time observing the trees around our school and chose our favourite to sketch. We looked closely at the shape of the leaves, the size of the trunk and if there were any blossoms or fruits.

DT Food

As part of our DT Food topic, today we looked at two different types of holds when cutting fruit: the claw grip and the bridge hold. We talked about keeping fingers away from the knife blade and how to prepare our cooking area to keep things hygienic. Tomorrow we will be tasting different types of fruit to see which are our favourites and which we might like to include in our final design fruit skewer.

Squirrels Litter Pick

This afternoon, we went for a walk near the mere and around our school to look for and pick up rubbish that people had left behind. We were shocked by how much we found in our local area and came back with nearly a bin bag full! It has helped us to realise how important it is to use the correct bins and keep our enviornment healthy.

Year One Artwork

Year one have been creating some fantastic pieces of art over the last few weeks, focussing on the style of Helen Parry’s seasons (we created a ‘winter floor’) and using colourblocking to mix warm and cold colours. Don’t they look great!

Year One Careers Week

Year One had a fantastic time for careers week at the end of February. We had visits from cyber security experts, dental nurses, dance principals and vets to talk about their jobs and answer our questions. We also had a visit from the healthy bodies team to remind us how to stay healthy and strong. Our favourite activity of the week was when ‘Little Cities’ came and we pretended to do all of the jobs that we had been learning about, as well as some extras!

Year One Castles

This afternoon we have created a ‘caslte museum’ in the school hall to show everybody our fantastic designs! We’ve had a chance to look at each castle’s features, design and also had a little play. You should be very proud of your hark work Year One – they look fantastic!

The castles will be displayed around school after half term and then will be sent home before the Easter break.

Thank you parents and carers for your support with creating these wonderful models.

Squirrels Robots!

Last week, we learnt about robots and how to move (program) them! We worked in groups to see if we could move our ‘Beebot’ from the start line to the finish line. As a whole class, we managed to make it go through the lego tunnel. It was great fun. Then today, we created our own maze for the Beebot to navigate through using our algorithms – it was very exciting!

Kandinsky Pattern Printing

Today we made some repeated patterns using a card and string stamper. We threaded the string to make abstract lines and then used acrylic paint to transfer and repeat the pattern.
