Medicine Administration:
It is advised, where possible, medicines should be administered at home, outside of school hours; this includes those prescribed three times a day – before school, after school and bedtime. If this is not possible i.e. medicine prescribed four times a day, prior to staff members administering the medication, a ‘Parental Agreement for School to Administer Medicine’ form must be completed & signed by the parent/carer. Please find the consent form below:
Medicines administration sheet
No child will be given medicines without written parental consent except in exceptional circumstances. Medicines MUST be in date, in the original container, with the prescription label showing the child’s name and giving the prescribed dosage instructions. Medicines which do not meet these criteria will not be administered.
If your child is required to have medicine in school, please ensure you bring the medicine to the school office to be stored securely. Any medications left over at the end of the course must be collected by the child’s parent/carer.
Absence due to Illness:
Children who are suffering from a sickness or diarrhoea bug should be kept at home until they have had a clear 48 hours from either condition to avoid the outbreak spreading through the class/school.
When your child is absent from school due to illness, it is important to inform us of the nature of the illness, as certain illnesses must be notified to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Reportable illnesses in schools, which require notification to the local Health Protection Team (HPT) and potentially Ofsted, include serious infections like
measles,
meningitis,
tuberculosis,
whooping cough,
hepatitis,
scarlet fever, and
E. coli. Schools must also report outbreaks of diarrhoeal illness, vomiting, and cases requiring hospitalisation.
Key reportable/notifiable diseases to the UKHSA include:
- Respiratory: COVID-19, Tuberculosis, Whooping cough (pertussis).
- Gastrointestinal: E. coli (VTEC), Typhoid, Dysentery (Shigella), Food poisoning.
- Rash/Viral: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Meningitis, Hepatitis.
- Other: Scarlet fever, Scabies (if an outbreak)
