Year 5 DT Food Morning
To end summer term, children in year 5 had a morning of making traditional greek style dips and flatbreads with the purpose of ‘To make a dip for a greek cuisine’.
We started off by researching traditional greek dips and we used this to create our own combinations. After eating, we then wrote reviews about our dips.
This comes after a half term of learning about ‘Ancient Greece’ in history and learning about ‘culture and seasonality’ in Design and Technology.
Fantastic Egyptian Themed Day!
What a brilliant day we had in Year 4! The children looked fantastic in their Egyptian-themed outfits and fully immersed themselves in our Ancient Egypt day.
A huge thank you to Shrewsbury Museum for bringing history to life with real artefacts, hieroglyphic stampers and clay to make our very own amulets. The children loved getting hands-on and learning through exploration.
During the other half of the day, we delved even deeper by investigating the mummification process using a tomato, exploring handball similar to an Egyptian game and constructing pyramids from LEGO. It was a day packed with creativity, curiosity, and fun – well done, everyone!
Blists Hill 2025
On Thursday 26th June we visited Blists Hill where we could experience Victorian life. We have been learning about Victorian life and school and it was amazing to experience this ourselves.
We had the opportunity to swap our money into Victorian currency so we could spend it in the shops.
Our workshop was the highlight of our trip, we all got dressed up as Victorian children and went to a Victorian school, we learnt how to write our alphabet on slate and how to act as a Victorian child.
EYFS – Sports week
EYFS had a great sports week, participating in lots of lovely sporting activities.
EYFS trip to Love to Stay.
Wrens and Robins have been reading Splash, Anna Hibiscus during our literacy sessions. We went to explore the beach area at love to stay and had a wonderful time.
Rounders!
Well done to the our year 5/6 rounders team who played in a tournament at Mary Webb on Wednesday 2nd July. They played amazingly well and got through to the semi-finals. They played with their usual good natured competitiveness and did Mereside proud.
Before this we also had the opportunity to take a team to the School Games county finals. This was due to the Shrewsbury event being postponed, yet a representative was still to attend and with good fortune we were the first ones to request the place in what was a first come, first served basis. It was a very competitive event, however the children held their own and showed off some great rounders skills, proving why they deserved the opportunity to attend – definitely valuable experience!

Area Athletics 2025
Wow! What an evening π€©βοΈ
Results/places may not have gone our way tonight, however the spirit of Mereside was definitely in full flow! It was great seeing our children take part in their events with such joy and pride. Also, the support between the children was amazing.
Well done to all participants in tonightβs Area Athletics event!! Very proud of them all for their efforts, in what is a very competitive event and conditions were hot!
A lot of our U12s were running/throwing/jumping against year group above so some valuable experience for them for next year! πͺ
However, we did have some success in terms of finalsβ¦Tabbie (one of our sports captains) won her heat and went through into the 80m sprint final as one of the fastest 8! She only went and achieved second place in the
Β final!! π₯ππ
Last year, she just missed out on a podium finish, finishing 4th, so to come back 12 months later with determination to get that medal makes you truly inspirational to all other Mereside children – an example that anything can happen if you put your mind to it! βοΈπ
Year 5 Space Centre Trip – 19.06.25
As a end of year treat, the year 5s went to space for the day!!
Over the year we have spent a lot of time across subjects learning about Space. In English, we read ‘The Darkest Dark’ and wrote biographies about astronaut Chris Hadfield. In Science, we studied the planets in our Solar System and looked into why we have day and night, seasons and the phases of the moon. In Art, we produced some Abstract space art with inspiration from artist Peter Thorpe.
Therefore, as an end of year trip, we feel it is only fitting we visit the National Space Centre!! Year 5s will be travelling to the National Space Centre, Leicester, on Thursday 19th June 2025 where we will have entrance to the Rocket Tower, all 6 interactive galleries and the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium, including a presenter led show.
The children had a great time and behaviour was spot on!!
Year 3 Sports Week!
We have had such a brilliant Sports Week in Year 3! π
We had an amazing Sports Day and were really excited when we saw all of our family and friends coming to cheer us on and support us. We did lots of different events including: egg and spoon race; chest throw; long and triple jump; bean bag shuffle; overhead throw; javelin; running and skipping races! We all showed great sportsmanship and represented our houses really well. We ended our Sports Day with yummy ice-pops to help us cool off after our hard work.
This wasn’t the end of Sports Week though! We were able to come together as a year group to have a go at the Try It Sessions which were led by our fantastic Year 6s. There were a range of different activities to have a go at, including: archery, parachute games, golf, volleyball and much more! It was so much fun trying sports we don’t usually do.
Shrewsbury Half Marathon Challenge 2025
Well done to all the participants who took part in the Shropshire Schools Half Marathon Challenge on Saturday 22nd April.
Children completed 12 miles in school leading up to the event, and then completed the final 1.1 miles at Shrewsbury West Mid Showground amongst hundreds of children from across Shropshire schools.
It was great to see so many children having fun, smiling and receiving their medals to acknowledge their achievement of completing the 2025 Half Marathon Challenge!
Primary Schools Half Marathon Challenge 2025
Forest School
We are having the best time in forest school this term!
Year 5/6 Cricket Event – 6.6.25
Well done to the year 5/6 boys who took part in the School Games cricket event this morning at Shelton Cricket club.
Lots of 4s and 6s being scored as well as some great catches and bowling! π
They won their group and lost in the semi finals – a respectful achievement! Good job π
Hoo Zoo Trip
We had a fantastic time at Hoo Zoo. We were able to make links with our ‘Rocks, Fossils and Soils’ Science topic and our Rainforests Geography topic!
We identified different animals and looked at where we would find them in the world, we were all really excited when we found animals whose natural habitat would be rainforests. We also had the exciting opportunity to take part in a Fossils workshop where they learnt all about fossilisation process as well as having the opportunity to handle real life fossils.π¦π¦₯πΈππ¦§
