Year 5’s Tudor Tour Experience

Throughout Spring 2, Year 5s have been learning about The Tudors (A Local Study) in their History lessons.

This started off with looking at The Tudors as a dynasty and using secondary sources to find more information about different areas, such as ‘Monarchs’, ‘Fashion’, ‘Food and drinks’ and ‘Hobbies’.

Moving on, we then looked more closely at ‘Tudor Buildings’ and we identified features of a Tudor Building such as the wattle and daub and the difference between Tudors who had a brick roof/chimney compared with those who had and wooden or thatched.

Children also had a go at drawing a Tudor building.

This then linked nicely when focusing on Shrewsbury being a Tudor town. We came up with some enquiry questions before going on a Tudor tour around Shrewsbury’s town centre with the Shrewsbury museum.

This was a valuable and informative experience where we were retrieving lots of information of primary sources such as the famous Tudor buildings and walking around the cobbled streets of Shrewsbury which were named for their purpose in Tudor times, such as ‘Milk street’ and ‘Butcher row’. Yet again, year 5s behaviour on the trip was exceptional, walking round cautiously, respecting the local community and listening intently throughout.

Back in school, the children then wrote a recount of their tour around Shrewsbury as an extended piece of writing!
