YEAR 6 SPORTS CAPTAINS

On Thursday 13th November, some of our year 6 sports captains took part in Stage 1 of the Central Leadership Academy Training led by our School Games Organiser Gareth Nagy.

Along with some other schools, they spent the morning learning about the importance and qualities of being a sports leader and came up with their own games to deliver to the other schools. Stage 2 and Stage 3 will take part over the course of this academic year, where they will build on the skills and experience of being a sports leader ready to help lead activities in school, such as sports days and ‘try-it’ sessions in the summer term.

Back in school, our sports captains spend their lunchtimes on the KS1 playground/school field leading mini activities to our younger children. Moreover, they help tidy and organise the sports cupboard and set up equipment for other classes’ PE lessons.

Mr Hignett is very thankful for their hard work, dedication and commitment with this role.

Autumn 1 Sports Events

A BIG well done to all the children who have taken part in sports events during this half term.

The football season has kickstarted and we have had some great success already! Our U11 boys have taken part in a number of tournaments and fixtures – winning the School Games Central League Tournament; reaching the final in the ESFA Football Tournament and winning their first fixture in the group stage of the County Plate! We have also had our U11 girls take part in the ESFA Tournament and our KS2 girls and Year 3/4 Boys taking part in the School Games Central League Tournament, with the girls finishing second place and the boys also winning their tournament! Sadly, our U11 girls had their County Plate fixtures postponed due to bad weather, so we await for a new date for them to get back out onto the pitch.

U10s/U9s boys (Mondays), U11 boys (Tuesdays) and KS2 girls (Thursdays) football clubs will be resuming after half term with more tournaments/fixtures to come too.

More sporting action…

Well done to our KS2 children who took part in the School Games Multi-Skills Target Event at Mary Webb Secondary. Also, to the year 5/6 girls who went to the ‘This Girl Can’ event at Lilleshall, where only selected schools were invited to attend. Last but not least, we had our year 5/6 hockey team who took part in the School Games Quicksticks Hockey at Meole Brace Secondary.

All children showed the spirit of Mereside throughout and we are incredibly proud of their efforts.

Meet our new School Council!

It’s been an exciting half-term at Mereside as every class has been busy electing their brand-new school council representatives. Just like a real election, each child who wanted to take part got the chance to stand up in front of their classmates and explain why they would make a great representative.

The results are now in, and each class has its very own council member ready to share ideas and help make Mereside the best school it can be. A huge well done to everyone who put themselves forward. It takes real confidence and courage to speak in front of your class.

School council will meet every Wednesday with Mr Jones.

Mental Health Day 2025

Friday 10th October 2025

                                                                  About Hello Yellow

Starting in 2016, Hello Yellow has been an annual campaign which is ran by Young Minds with an aim to raise awareness and much needed funds for young people’s mental health. Every World Mental Health Day (10 October) thousands of schools, workplaces and communities across the UK wear yellow, fundraise and show young people they’re not alone.
Hello Yellow is a pivotal part of the work that the team at YoungMinds do, helping to build on the promise that no young person should ever feel alone in their mental health. You can stand with us in supporting young people’s mental health.
Here at Mereside, we are asking for you to come in wearing something yellow to show your support; this may be a top, jumper, socks, hair band etc.
There will be a bake sale held by our School Council after school (3:15pm) on Friday 10th October at the front of school by the oak tree.

Please bring in any baked goods for us to sell, yellow cakes are a bonus!
Please being any donations to the office on Thursday or Friday.
Due to allergies in school, no nuts.
We have a some gluten free children in school, please label any gluten free options.

Big Book Giveaway

On Wednesday 10th September, we had a Big Book Giveaway!  Every child in school had the opportunity to visit the hall where hundreds of books were laid out for viewing, reading and keeping.  Children then chose a book to take home and keep.  We have been lucky enough to fundraise enough funds to buy lots of new books for our school so it was lovely to be able to give away some of our pre-loved books to the children of Mereside.

We hope you all enjoy your new books at home!

If you would like any more books to keep, please visit our rainbow Book Swap Shed by reception and take whatever you like.

School Council Bake Sake

During our latest school council meeting, we discussed improvements to the playground to make break times more enjoyable for everyone. It was raised that there many places to sit, have a chat, read a book or play some board games but there is plenty of room to run around and be active.

To help raise money for more seating, school council have organised a whole school Bake Sale that will be held in the school hall at the end of the day on the 8th April.

We are encouraging everyone to join in and bring in tasty treats that you have baked at home or bought from a shop from the 7th April, this is the ensure they are fresh! However, due to allergies in school, we can’t have baked goods that contain nuts and anything gluten free needs to be labelled.

  • 8th April – End of the day.
  • School hall
  • Donated baked goods to be brought in on the 7th.
  • 50p a cake!

Lichfield Cathedral Trip

We had an amazing day at the magnificent, Lichfield Cathedral. We met with all the other schools in St. Chads Academy and took part in a very special worship. We sung songs and presented some beautiful artwork to take back to Mereside and put in our worship area. Thank you to all the children who came and represented the school so sensibly, you were a credit to Mereside!
