Intent
At Mereside Church of England Primary Academy, we aim to provide a high-quality French education that will help our pupils to acquire a global outlook on the world, becoming good communicators with people from different cultures and a positive attitude to developing their own language skills. Pupils will develop a genuine curiosity, enjoyment, and positive attitude toward foreign languages and other cultures. We aim to lay a solid groundwork in Key Stage 2 (KS2) to prepare pupils for secondary school (KS3) language transitions. Pupils will also connect language learning with literacy in English and the broader primary curriculum.
Implementation
Our MFL curriculum here at Mereside CE Primary Academy has a progressive sequence of teaching throughout key stage 2, building upon skills and knowledge. The ‘Primary Languages Network’ scheme supports teaching and learning of MFL across the school. Children will learn to communicate effectively with increasing fluency and respond to both the spoken and written word. Children will learn language through a variety of methods including role play, interactive resources and exposure to linguistic books, to conversational skills. A metacognitive approach underpins the teaching of language and across the curriculum. Children will learn to write purposefully and in context at varying lengths in the French language.
