CHILDREN IN NEED: WHEN YEAR 6 MET PUDSEY!

On Friday 14th November, Mereside came into school wearing casual clothes, raising money for Children in Need. In the afternoon, they had a special visitor…Pudsey Bear! The children were excited to give Pudsey a hug and/or high-five.

YEAR 6 SPORTS CAPTAINS

On Thursday 13th November, some of our year 6 sports captains took part in Stage 1 of the Central Leadership Academy Training led by our School Games Organiser Gareth Nagy.

Along with some other schools, they spent the morning learning about the importance and qualities of being a sports leader and came up with their own games to deliver to the other schools. Stage 2 and Stage 3 will take part over the course of this academic year, where they will build on the skills and experience of being a sports leader ready to help lead activities in school, such as sports days and ‘try-it’ sessions in the summer term.

Back in school, our sports captains spend their lunchtimes on the KS1 playground/school field leading mini activities to our younger children. Moreover, they help tidy and organise the sports cupboard and set up equipment for other classes’ PE lessons.

Mr Hignett is very thankful for their hard work, dedication and commitment with this role.

Happy Half Term

Just wanting to share how well the children have started year 6. They have produced lots of high quality pieces of work and have shown great interest in the topics this half term. They also showed great maturity with their first set of assessments – showing lots of resilience throughout. Moreover, they have taken the responsibility of being the oldest in the school in their strides and have been great role models to the rest of the pupils, especially the sport captains, lunch duty monitors, prefects and school council members.

Have a fun, yet restful half term break!

See you back on Monday 3rd November

Year 6 Autumn Term Learning

See below some of our double page spreads which is an opportunity to show-off our learning from the term.

Year 6 World Mental Health Day

On October 10th, children in Year 6 (and across the school) raised awareness for Young Minds by dressing in yellow. In class, we learnt about what Mental Health is, how to get help with our Mental Health and how our brain works.

Year 6 Autumn Term PE

During this half term, in PE we have participated in Invasion Games. Developing ours skills of passing, dribbling, intercepting and shooting through the sports ‘hockey’ and ‘basketball/netball’. Understanding that these skills are transferrable across the sports. We have also participated in small-sided games developing tactical awareness and gameplay strategies.

Year 5 DT – Frame Structures

In DT last year, we looked at the importance of a structure and what is needed to form a strong sturdy structure involving triangulation. We then planned and designed our own miniature play trails and used skills such as measuring and sawing to put our designs together.

Year 6 World War II Experience

On Monday 20th October, to conclude our half term of learning, we had a visitor come to our school to share lots of information about World War II. Topics such as rationing, evacuation, air raids and The Blitz were talked about with artefacts, music and radio messages shared. We also got to experience what it would have been like during an air raid with the siren and going into our very own makeshift Anderson shelter!
